I was a teenager during the "stereo wars" of the 1970's. Within a 1 1/2 mile radius of my parents house there was a Radio Shack, Sounds Great, Sound Playground, Hi-Fi Stereo House, and Fred Locke Stereo, all competing for consumer dollars, and all showcasing the latest and greatest audio products. I had a home stereo system like most of my friends did, and about ten years ago I began buying vintage audio equipment on Ebay, and in my basement I have a receiver, reel to reel tape deck, cassette, deck, a 8 track player, speakers and shelves of records, cassettes and cd's. My teenage boys both received ipods few years ago as a xmas present, and I purchased a Nano about a year later. Since I brought it, I hardly ever turn my audio system on . I like the convenience of being able to bring my music with me, and being able to select the songs that I want to listen to. And with ear buds I can listen without disturbing the rest of my family. Even with my receiver at a low volume, and being in our basement, you can still hear a feel the music when my old audio system is turned on. My only negative comment is that the ipods battery, like many of the high tech electronic items of today, holds a charge for less time, as it ages, and the replacement batteries are expensive. But I'm sure as the technology improves the battery life will as well.
You can find a great selection of Ipods and other MP3 player at M3PO
