Making basketball hoops is the easiest and also the hardest part about basketball. You have to be able to shoot from every imaginable position, and with defensive players doing everything they can to block you. Also, you have to know when to shoot and when to pass to a teammate. The following are a few suggestions for improving your shooting skills.
The layup is one of the key shots when playing basketball. It's usually the first one that players learn. Some people call this the easiest shot, but that is actually true. You need to be able to outmaneuver the players of the other team and perfect timing to perform a good layup. To execute a layup, push off the ground with the foot opposite from the side of the hoop you're approaching. In other words, if you're doing a layup from the left side of the hoop, you need to push off with your right foot. When you do this, you have the best balance and momentum to make your shot. Also, focus your eyes on the square above the hoop and not on the ball. Although basketball is an extremely powerful and physically demanding game, you can learn to shoot better by becoming more comfortable and controlling the ball in more gentle manner. Obviously, you want to hold the ball tight enough so that you control it and no one else can take it from you. However, when shooting, many players make the mistake of holding on too tightly and applying more force than necessary. You can see evidence of this when the ball bounces hard off the rim. Try to give the ball spin and follow through with your fingertips. This is so that it goes where you want it and not just in a general direction.
You may have heard of the power of visualization, and this applies to all sports as well as other activities. Research on the effectiveness of visualization has been done using basketball players, as the results of shooting a ball into a basket is an activity that's simple to measure. Surprisingly enough, it's been shown that players can improve their shooting performance as much by visualizing as by actual practice! This doesn't, of course, mean that you should stop practicing and only visualize. There's no reason why you have to choose one over the other, as visualizing doesn't take much time. You can visualize while playing or while doing anything else during the day. Making basketball shots is something that you will improve upon if you make the effort and work on your form. These suggestions will come in handy when you pinpoint what you want to improve during your practices. However, you must also focus on the areas that you think need improvements. If you're having trouble with a certain technique, don't avoid it but work extra hard at it and you'll eventually see improvements. Even the best players in the world cannot stop practicing and must continue to work on their shooting skills to continue moving on up.
