MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and its popularity continues to soar as it attracts an increasing number of participants. The activity is undertaken by those simply wishing to stay fit and also those that wish to take on the challenge of competing against others. But whether you are taking up the sport for fitness or to be competitive; there are some essential pieces of MMA gear that you need to stay safe.
Gloves for training
During MMA bouts the professionals wear 4oz gloves. However, these offer little protection and you are advised to go for 12 or 14oz training gloves for pad and bag work. In order to practice groundwork properly you should also invest in some grappling gloves.
Vital protection
It is essential to have some form of cup fitted to protect your genitalia from a stray low-blow. There are three types available to you here; Thai style, classic jockstraps or compression shorts which fit under normal MMA fight shorts.
Mouth protection
Unless you purchase a mouth guard there is a real possibility that you may lose your teeth due to a facial blow. Basic models can be secured for a small price and will do a great job. Further down the line you have the option of going for a mouth guard that is moulded specially to fit.
Protective head gear
Protective head gear to be worn during sparring will usually be provided at gyms and classes. Although these will be fine to use in your early sessions; it can be time consuming to mess with the straps each time you fit the head guard. Going for your own head protection will mean less time wasted fitting it during the session, meaning you can concentrate on getting fit.
Rash guard
The last piece of MMA gear that you should secure is a rash guard. Whilst getting the odd friction burn from the mat isn’t the end of the world, it can be a bit of an annoyance. To prevent such injuries you should pick out a suitable rash guard, which is a snug fitting top that greatly reduces friction when coming into contact with the floor.
