Benefit Of Cyanoacrylate In Wood

Cyanoacrylate is the fastest setting of all adhesives. It's been developed into many different viscosities from ultra-thin to thick gels, and with setting times that vary from just one or two seconds to more than a minute. The principal attributes are it's clear drying, watertight and Cyanoacrylate Wood tasks will require no clamping, you merely keep the parts together till they are established. CA is triggered by any moisture present but once it begins to cure it continues on its own, making it a true one component self-crosslinking adhesive.

Cyanoacrylate use in wood working has many distinctive benefits over alternative adhesives. Certainly other adhesives like epoxies and resins have their uses in wood tasks too, but in particular CA trumps them all in these functions:

o Because it's rapid setting, its use where clamping is impossible is definitely an priceless trait. Apply CA to one side of the joint, then swiftly press the parts together and hold them till the glue sets, normally in less than a minute
o With regards to repairs, CA will adhere to old glue that may not be removed. Cyanoacrylate will stick to finish, but applying paste wax will block the glue. However, it is possible to glue to a finished surface, one thing few adhesives will do.
o It's excellent for sealing end grain before staining to create a far more even stain.
o Cyanoacrylate adhesive may be used as crack or gouge filler when added to sawdust. Turners and luthiers fill cracks and little voids in raw wood by filling them with sanding dust, then dropping CA in to the powder to form a solid plug. Thin versions will seep into even the smallest of fractures.
o Used for mounting green or dry blocks for turning.
o Good for repairing chips in high tech finishes. CA is often used to fill little chips in lacquer, polyurethane, and polyester finishes.
o CA can be a great wood sealer to get rid of pinholes. It's often used as a finish or as a sealer under other finishes.

For really absorbent wood or open grain, use one of the thick formulations. CA cures slower on acidic woods like mahogany and oak, however an accelerator could be used to overcome that. As well as speeding up the curing process, you will obtain a greater bond on oily or high acid content woods if you spray or wipe accelerator on one side of the joint before placing glue on the other. You can also speed up a bond by spraying accelerator on it after the parts are together.

In the event the applicator gets to be clogged, unscrew the cap and get rid of the plug by pushing it through, or by soaking the cap in debonder. It's a good idea to always have a bottle of debonder on hand, specially since you are most likely to glue yourself to something sooner or later. Either use nitromethane, or acetone as a solvent for debonding Cyanoacrylate.

Because CA fumes are irritating to your eyes and lungs, although not especially harmful, it's a good idea to wear disposable gloves and goggles to keep the glue off your hands and out of your eyes and use it inside a effectively ventilated area. Always follow the Industrial Adhesive Manufacturer™s suggested safety warnings.
