Dropping The Mary Celeste Papers into a single writing genre is not actually possible. One can similarly explain it as mystery story, a detective tale, or even a really amusing comedy. Others would be fast to add that there is also the merest whiff of sci-fi.
The scene is set in a dark and dull railway depot in London around 1975 and follows the lives of a band of well drawn-up, gritty individuals as they are roped into resolving two of the world's most popular maritime mysteries. The title of the novel may lead you to accurately deduce that one of them is that of the Marie/Mary Celeste.
The humor that the novel's many reviewers speak of comes out of the typically spiky love/hate relationship between the story's two major heros; railway apprentice's Charlie and Suss. They are at once articulate, erudite, playful, upstanding and youthfully vulgar. You will love them.
A deceased worker, found in the railway depot quickly brings Scotland Yard calling, but even they struggle to piece together the chain of events that has preceded the death. Follow the detectives to New York as the Mafia are implicated and follow them home again as the mystery deepens back in London, releasing a worldwide media hurricane as it does so.
What did the dead man know about a one hundred-year old ship's log and why does the CIA not want anyone to learn the secret? Will the answer actually reside in The Mary Celeste Papers? And could it be that a group of railwaymen, a middle-aged errand boy and the widowed owner of a guesthouse will succeed where Scotland Yard's finest have failed?
